Objective
Stroke, in the form of an intracranial hemorrhage, is one of the leading causes of acute neurological deficits. The current gold standard for imaging and diagnosing intracranial hemorrhage is with x-ray computed tomography (CT), a modality that requires the use of ionizing radiation and large equipment. As an alternative, we are developing a portable ultrasound device for detecting intracranial hemorrhage.
Approach, Plan
A prototype device has been designed, constructed, and tested for initial clinical tests. A validation study to include concomitant US and CT scans of patients suspected of intracranial hemorrhage will be performed. During NAMIC Project Week, a research platform will be designed to integrate and register A-mode US data with CT scans via IGTLink.
