At a high level, the migration from slicer2 to slicer3 will maintain the following:
- It will be possible to import .xml files created in Slicer2 into Slicer3's .mrml format (but not the other way around).
- It will be possible to have both versions installed on the same system.
- Modules will be migrated to Slicer3 during the course of 2007. Initial focus of Slicer3 is on Base viewing functionality, filter modules, a basic image editor, and Diffusion Tensor Imaging.
- Slicer2 has developed over several years with custom features that will not be available in Slicer3. We will try to prioritize the most widely used features.
