Objective

The University of Iowa has developed a complete Finite Element meshing workflow to operates from image source through to FE simulation using Abaqus. For this project, we are evaluating neural network algorithms for segmentation of bone and joint structures. We are incorporating meshing modification tools, such as Sandia's Mesquite library for mesh improvement, to work in the NA-MIC environment.

Approach, Plan

Throughout this project, we follow the process of developing standalone applications to address the problem first, then adapt them for deployment in the NA-MIC toolkit.

Progress

June 2007 Project Week

Discussion of meshing improvement packages. Drafted an effort with Sandia Labs to test the Mesquite mesh improvement library for biomedical mesh applications. Discussed licensing issues with NA-MIC regarding external libraries. Specific accomplishments this week:

  • Integrated a rigid body initialization for a Thirion Demons registration for atlas <-> subject registration. The above modification was used to warp the atlas to the subject as shown in the figures.
  • Neural network code now supports all ITK transforms for registration of the atlas<->subject. This was achieved using the itkTransformReader and the a templated function over the image type and transform type to resample the images.

Jan 2007 Project Half Week

Completed a command line module to perform voxel meshing in Slicer3. Developed VTK-based algorithms for creating triangulated surface representations with embedded holes.
