Access to Golby lab servers from outside the SPL network requires:

1) Account on SPL network

2) List of "s/keys" for the account - single-use passwords to be used when connecting to the SPL gateway machine "gatekeeper"

Fill out this form:

http://splweb.bwh.harvard.edu/pages/user_account.html

'Supervisor' should be a Golby lab member with SPL account, department is "Golby Lab" and research group is "Neurosurgery". If this link is broken, email help@bwh.harvard.edu.

Hello help,

Please create s/key list for user 'username,' and fax to ###-###-####.

If you are in the hospital, it will probably be faster and easier to offer to pick up the s/key list from one of the System Administrators in Thorn 323, rather than faxing (N.B. Isaiah does not like fax machines, and is therefore biased).

To log in (from a mac, nearly identical on any other unix):

1) Start the "Terminal". This should be located in the folder Applications -> Utilities on your hard drive.

(here is a site about the Terminal:  http://www.macedition.com/bolts/bolts_20020805.php  )

2) In the terminal, type the following:

ssh -X username@gatekeeper.bwh.harvard.edu

3) When you are prompted for "otp-md5 120 ......" (see attached picture).. Then type in the words found on the appropriate line of the sheet I faxed, for example: "120: just huff brig rid clod scar" (this is from mine, not yours). You must type them in with spaces included, then press "Enter".

If you see "BWH RESTRICTED SHELL" then everything went correctly, and you are part of the way in.

If you see "Permission denied, please try again." Then something may have been wrong with the password or user name. Try again, with the same line number (the number does not decrease until you successfully use it once).

4) Under "BWH RESTRICTED SHELL" there will be some options, including

"[h]ost  <hostname> "

Type "h" and "Enter", and then under "Host:" prompt, type "berlioz" ex:

Host: berlioz "Enter"

There may be a prompt about "authenticity of the host", just type "y" or "yes", then "Enter".

5) Next, you should see "username@berlioz's password:"

Type the appropriate password (for berlioz!!) then "Enter".

If you see "username@berlioz:~$ "

Then you are in!!!

The next thing we need to do is get X-windows running.. Try typing "xeyes" then "Enter" at the berlioz prompt in step 5. If you see a basic pair of eyes on the screen, which follow your mouse pointer, then everything is set up (the eyes should show up within 2-3 seconds at most). If not, we will have to figure out how to get X11 installed, because I don't think it is installed by default on the Mac.

Note: Mac OS X X11.app may be downloaded here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/x11formacosx.html

Note: X11 is already on your linux machine if you are using any graphical interface! If xeyes and other windows refuse to appear, there may be configuration or xhost access issues.
