|The NA-MIC '''Project Week''' is a hands on activity in which medical image computing researchers interested in an open science gathering twice a year to create solutions using the image computing platform, [http://www.slicer.org 3D Slicer], and its [http://www.vtk.org VTK], [http://www.itk.org ITK], and [http://www.cmake.org CMake] components. Founded in 2005, along with the National Alliance for Medical Image Computing (NA-MIC) which was chartered with building a computational infrastructure to support biomedical research as part of the NIH-funded [http://www.ncbcs.org/ NCBC] program, Project Week has become one of the major events in the calendars of several NIH-funded Center efforts. It is held in the summer in conjunction with the [http://www.cars-int.org/ CARS] conference, typically during the second half of June, and in the winter at MIT, typically in early January.

|'''What?''' The Project Week is a week-long hands on activity in which medical image computing researchers create solutions using the open source image computing platform, [http://www.slicer.org 3D Slicer], and [http://www.vtk.org VTK], [http://www.itk.org ITK], and [http://www.cmake.org CMake] libraries.   Participants work collaboratively on solutions that lie on the interfaces of the fields of computer science, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, and medicine. In contrast to conferences and workshops where the primary focus is to report results, the objective of the Project Week is to provide a venue for creators of medical image computing open-source software creators to collaboratively work.

The participating community has grown exponentially. Since August 2014, Project Week is an MICCAI-endorsed event. During Project Week, participants work collaboratively on open-science solutions for problems that lie on the interfaces of the fields of computer science, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, and medicine. In contrast to conventional conferences and workshops in which the primary focus is reporting on progress of projects. The objective of the Project Week is to provide a venue for this community of medical open-source software creators. Project Weeks are open to all, publicly advertised, and funded through fees paid by the attendees. Participants are encouraged to stay for the entire event.

Project Week Activities: Everyone shows up with a project which has been discussed with participants in the preceding 6 weeks via conference calls. The projects include platform work, algorithm development, and biomedical applications. The first day of the Project Week begins with a 2-hour introductory meeting in which each project and team is introduced to the participants in-person, and is followed by a mix of working sessions and breakout sessions on special topics.

Potential participants propose projects during these meetings, and collaboratively create a list of projects that are of mutual interest. The projects include platform work, algorithm development, and biomedical applications. Through the course of the meetings, each participant selects one or more project teams and develops goals for the week. Introduction

Participants in the 2015 winter Project Week.
Participants at the 2016 Winter Event
What? The Project Week is a week-long hands on activity in which medical image computing researchers create solutions using the open source image computing platform, 3D Slicer, and VTK, ITK, and CMake libraries.

When, where, how much? Twice a year - June in Europe, and January at MIT. Ad-hoc meetings are added occasionally. The registration fee is approximately 350 (USD or Euro), and is used to cover coffee and food.

How does it work? Weekly videoconferences for preparation begin 8-12 weeks before an event. Potential participants propose projects during these meetings, and collaboratively create a list of projects that are of mutual interest. The projects include platform work, algorithm development, and biomedical applications. Through the course of the meetings, each participant selects one or more project teams and develops goals for the week. The first day of the Project Week itself begins with a 2-hour in-person introduction to all projects and participants. The rest of the week consists of a mix of working sessions and breakout sessions on special topics, as decided by the participants during the preparatory meetings.

Who can attend? Project Weeks are open to all and publicly advertised. One-day participation is permitted for first-time attendees, but rest stay for the entire event. Email announcements are sent to the Project Week mailing list.

Who should attend? This is harder to determine. Your best bet is to send an email (see below) or attend a preparatory videoconference.

What else? The Project Week series was founded in 2005, along with the National Alliance for Medical Image Computing (NA-MIC), which was chartered by the NIH to build a computational infrastructure for biomedical research. Today, Project Week has become one of the major events in the calendars of several NIH-funded Center efforts. Participants in Project Week include NAC, NCIGT, QIICR, and OCAIRO. As of 2014, Project Week is also a MICCAI endorsed event.

Who to contact? Project Weeks are led by Tina Kapur, PhD, who is happy to tell you more about them.
