# Consultation
The pathophysiology of pelvic organ prolapse (hernias of the uterus, vagina and rectum) involves acute and chronic forces that result in rupture and/or permanent deformation of pelvic floor connective tissue and musclulature.  Successful surgical repair requires restoration or augmentation that will withstand those forces over decades.  Currently, most attempts to measure the mechanical properties of pelvic floor elements has been using very small explants.  MRI elastography may allow non-invasive, more relevant assessment of mechanical properties that would revolutionize the ability to model disesase states and assess repair techniques.

# Education program
I would like to collaborate with researchers in dynamic MRI imaging to see if MRI elastographic measurement of pelvic floor tissue properties is feasible.

* Last week Valerie met with the Education Unit at MGH to discuss the development of imaging basics courses for research nurses and research coordinators. Attendees really liked the idea of offering an expanded (1.5 hour) version of the Risks and Benefits of Imaging course developed by Jeff, followed by a series of 1.5 hour modality-based courses on how to describe imaging procedures to study participants. We also discussed providing information about Radiation Safety Course requirements at these offerings. We talked about running these courses in early 2011 (January?) and that we would offer these courses both here and at LMA.

In attendance:

  • Valerie Humblet
  • Annick Van den Abbeele
  • Randy Gollub
  • Stephan Voss
  • Simon Warfield
  • Clare Tempany
  • Gordon Williams

1. Consultation

  • JIRA #167: MRI elastography for in-vivo determination of mechanical properties of pelvic floor structures. Clare will take care of that consultation.

2. Education program

  • Jeff has been deputized to designate a leader for each of the 3 upcoming sessions, the leaders will be in charge of filling the speakers list.
  • Last week Valerie met with the Education Unit at MGH to discuss the development of imaging basics courses for research nurses and research coordinators.

3. Pilot grants

  • The research navigators sent Valerie a list of all the pilot grant applications with an imaging component and the outcome of the application (invited to interview, funded).
    • She will do an analysis and send the group a more detailed table (modality, level of PI, member of imaging consortium in the applicants list, consultation before submission).
    • We will send PI's a costume email to offer our consolation service. It would be valuable for people who were not funded but also for people who were funded but might need a little more education on their study design, data analysis etc.
