Extended Summary

Nature of the Event

The Open Source Workshop at MICCAI 2005 (Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention www.miccai2005.org) was held on October 30th 2005. This event, despite the fact of being scheduled on a Sunday, and as the last event of a conference of four days, counted with the participation of 80 attendants. The Open Source Workshop used for its infrastructure advanced concepts in electronic publishing such as

  • Fully online submission
  • Fully online open non-anonymous peer-review,
  • Free Open Access,
  • No-Copyright transfer and Creative Commons Attribution License
  • Support for reproducibility of results.

Response to the Workshop

A total of 37 authors took the challenge of submitting papers that were accompanied with the source code they use during their research, the input images they used for testing their algorithms and the output images that the algorithms produced. The goal of providing this additional material is to enforce the reproducibility that should characterize any serious scientific work. The papers were posted in open access online for a period of two months. No subscription was required for downloading the papers or its companion electronic material. The papers were reviewed by 31 volunteer reviewers who produced 90 reviews. These reviews were non-anonymous and were posted online along with the papers. Authors were allowed to submit second and third revision of their papers in order to address the reviewers comments.

The Workshop attracted more than double the attendance of any of the other Tutorials presented at the conferences. The Workshop organizers already have been invited to repeat the Workshop in next year MICCAI conference to be held in Copenhagen. (www.miccai2006.dk)

Level of the Conference

MICCAI is an International conference that had reached its 8th edition and was attended by 660 researchers from Industry and Academia. The success of the Open Source Workshop and its Open Access infrastructure supported by the Insight Journal is a clear illustration of the need for new paradigms in scientific publishing that capable of providing fast and efficient information sharing to researches involved in technologically advanced fields.

The Insight Software Consortium (ISC) and the National Alliance for Medical Image Computing (NA-MIC) are hosting a one-day MICCAI workshop that will feature oral and poster presentations of peer-reviewed papers that discuss freely available data, open-source toolkits, and open-source applications for medical image analysis.

There are several unique, open-science concepts being applied to this conference. Please read the following carefully.

There are three ways for you to participate in and benefit from this workshop:

  1. Submit papers
  2. Review papers
  3. Attend the workshop

Paper Submission

We strongly encourage researchers with papers accepted at MICCAI to submit companion papers on the role of open-source software in their MICCAI research. Papers related to medical image analysis research not presented at MICCAI are also welcome!

Papers should be submitted online via the Insight Journal:

http://www.InsightSoftwareConsortium.org/InsightJournal

Key points regarding submission:

  • Paper format: Please use the MICCAI paper template for your

submission. We recommend that papers be approximately four to five pages. Please submit papers with "camera-ready" quality. There is no need to anonymize your paper - the review process is not blinded - see below.

  • Submissions are registered with a digital library (implemented using

DSpace, www.dspace.org). Therefore, your submission is automatically assigned a unique open-archive "handle" that (unlike URLs) persists on the web and that (unlike other web-based database keys) allows your submission to be indexed by Google and other search engines. Handles also serve as a mechanism whereby submissions can be permanently referenced in publications.

  • Authors are encouraged to include other files with their submission,

particularly videos, code, and data.

  • Every submission immediately appears on the Insight Journal site in

the Special Issue on the MICCAI Workshop. Therefore, every submission is available to any registered member of the Insight Journal (and registration is free). See information on reviews given below.

  • Submission requires licensing to the Insight Journal the right to

distribute your submission under the Creative Commons' "by-attribution" license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5). Copyright transfer is not required.

Additional details are available on the Insight Software Consortium's website:

http://www.InsightSoftwareConsortium.org

Paper Review

Every submission is available for true peer-review. That is, any registered member of the Insight Journal (and registration is free) is able to download, score, and comment on any submission to this workshop. In turn, reviews are also public.

On September 10th (deadline for the review process), the editorial committee will consider the posted reviews as well as the intent of the workshop to select papers for oral and poster presentation. Those decisions will be announced on or about September 15th.

Attend the Workshop

Our goal is to make this conference "nearly free." We expect the fee to be under $50, but the final price has not been set. We can assure that one author from each accepted paper will have attendance fees waived.
