  • Updated March 28, 2006 (original entry Feb 17, 2005) (C. Fennema Notestine)
  • ** Project #5 NIA/ADRC (UCSD/L. Thal & T. Jernigan: legacy T1, clinical, neuropsych AD and controls):
      • See on-going mBIRN MAD study at MBIRN project page Multi-site AD.
  • ** Project #12 NIA/VETSA (UCSD/W. Kremen: longitudinal, multi-site (UCSD and MGH) study; T1, T2, and DTI, neuropsych, clinical assessment, genetic Vietnam-era (male-male) twins from the VA twin registry (expected n=300 pairs, half at each site) a nationwide sample):
      • On-going study is collecting Siemens 1.5T scans at UCSD and MGH with approx. 330 datasets to date.
      • Data acquisition and gradient distortion correction are facilitated by BIRN protocols to ensure that all data are acquired using the same parameters and settings to allow comparability of data.
      • Structural MR analysis with FreeSurfer underway for subcortical segmentation and cortical parcellation.
      • DTI analysis path development on-going with mBIRN initiatives (see Mbirn: MRI Diffusion Tools).
      • Neuropsychological and cortisol studies also on-going.
  • ** Project #13 NIA/ADNI (UCSF/Weiner; UCSD/Dale: longitudinal, multi-site (60 sites) study; T1, T2, PET, clinical and genetic AD (n=200), MCI (n=400) and controls (n=200) each scanned 5-7 times across 5 years. Expect 4200 total data sets):
  • ** Project #14 NIMH/CHARTER (UCSD/I. Grant & T. Jernigan - CNS HIV Anti-retroviral Therapy Effects Research: longitudinal, multi-site study; T1, T2, PD, MRS (and DTI at UCSD), clinical, treatment response, CSF HIV RNA, CD4 AIDS patients with and without dementia):
      • CHARTER study aims to examine white and gray matter changes in HIV and the relationship of these changes to treatment regimens.
      • There are five national sites (all GE 1.5T systems), the center is located here at UCSD, and the project is now in the data collection phase for first year followup scans.
      • mBIRN has consulted with CHARTER regarding gradient distortion correction in a combined image set of 3D T1/PD and 2D T2/PD volumes.
      • Future collaborative aims are related to the integration of complementary tools for analysis of multi-spectral data that aims to capture these white matter changes more automatically, with the local group of investigators (R. Notestine, A. Gamst, A. Dale).
